A WASTE OF TIME

THIS WORK DEALS WITH THE INTIMACY OF WASTE. IN THE CONTEXT OF THE QUESTION "IS THIS ART OR SHALL WE JUST THROW IT AWAY?" A WASTE OF TIME EXAMINES WHERE THE LIMIT OF WASTE LIES. TICKETS TO THE CINEMA, CHEWING GUM PACKS FROM FIRST DATES, RECEIPTS FROM A LONG-AWAITED VISIT TO A MUSEUM: WE OFTEN ATTRIBUTE EMOTIONAL VALUE TO WASTE. FOR ONE MONTH, CLAIRE O'SULLIVAN KEPT A "TRASH DIARY" AND DOCUMENTED HER WASTE DISPOSAL. ON EACH PAGE THERE IS A CLIP FROM CLAIRE'S WRITTEN DIARY OF THAT DAY TO INVESTIGATE TO WHAT EXTENT THE WASTE DIARY CAN BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE WRITTEN ONE. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WASTE IS NOT AS ANONYMOUS AS WE THINK.
